" Forget Hibernation "
ORIGINAL Brazillian Soapstone 10" x 8" x 5"
Vance Theoret is a stone carver of Mohawk/Metis descent. He has been working in stone, primarily in soapstone and alabaster, for 30 years. Although he carves a wide selection of different wild animals as the subject matter for his work, the bear has always and continues to be his favorite.Using a direct carving method Vance allows the shapes suggested by the stone to guide his carving. "I let the stone tell me what it wants to be".In this manner the pieces that Vance carves seem to not only have a life of their own but this method also showcases the real star of the show. The stone itself!
Sculpting
Firstly there are several ways to approach carving a piece of stone. Of these ways there is no right way or wrong way.Only the way that best works for that artist’s mental and visual processes. Some artists will make drawings and sketches and then use them as a guide for their stone work. Other artists will make small clay models and then reproduce them in a larger form. And still there are those, like myself, who will look at a piece of stone and see the shapes already inside waiting to be released and use what’s called a “direct carving” method.
